THE 2010 ASPEN AWARD FOR ART: MARILYN MINTER
During the 2010 artCRUSH dinner, Director and Chief Curator
Heidi Zuckerman Jacobson will present artist honoree Marilyn
Minter with the Aspen Award for Art. The award is given each
year to an artist who has either exhibited, or will exhibit,
at the museum. Minter’s photorealistic
paintings capture the moment where clarity becomes
abstraction, beauty commingles with the grotesque and the
body is cast as a site of aggressive desire. For the past 20
years, Minter has explored what she calls the “pathology of
glamour” — the painstaking everyday un- and redoing
of women’s appearance in the drive to achieve physical
perfection. Closing in tightly on her subjects, she examines
glamour, seeking to permeate our fantasies in order to show
the viewer that the human condition itself
makes the ideal impossible to obtain.
In honoring Marilyn Minter, Zuckerman Jacobson comments:
“I became a fan of Marilyn’s work during the ‘90s and have
been following her career closely ever since. She is an
important artist, who, up until now, has not been honored
for her work, and we are fortunate to be able to do so
at artCRUSH this summer. Some artCRUSH aficionados
might also remember that she very generously contributed a
wonderful limited edition set of pillows for artCRUSH 2006.”
2009’s Aspen Award for Art was presented to American artist
Fred Tomaselli, who was featured in a solo exhibition at the
museum through October 11, 2009.
Past Aspen Award for Art
honorees include: Ed Ruscha (2008), Jim Hodges (2007),
Tony Feher (2006), and Richard Tuttle (2005).
