Joyce Brooks, Editor-in-Chief, Black Tie International Magazine, Interviews Fr. Gabriel Mejia, at The International Brain Research Gala, " New Frontiers in Brain Science"
April 8th, 2010, was the inaugural showing of the documentary Saving the Disposable Ones. This documentary, created by the David Lynch Foundation, tells the story of the street children in Columbia called the "disposable ones," and they live and sometimes die on the streets. These children are unloved, unwanted, and endure abuses on many levels. Colombians are a kind and generous people, but crime related to cocaine trafficking has made cites such as Medellin among the most violent in the world. This deeply moving documentary portrays the work of a Catholic priest in Columbia - Father Gabriel Mejia - who has worked for more than 20 years to provide street children relief from their struggle to survive and to help them create a better life. Father Gabriel has learned through his work with the street children that the desire to move away from their life of the streets must come from within the children themselves.
The film documents an extraordinary transformation in the lives of the children. They are freed from the torments they endured living on the streets, recover from their drug addictions and gain an education. Father Gabriel embodies the wisdom, patience and knowledge required to rescue the "disposable" children. The education he provides includes the highest standards of traditional education, along with mediation, yoga, and an area where the children and teens participate in growing organic food that supplies most of their food. These program restore their rights, their dignity, and offers them a bright future to be a normal, productive member of society.
