The Young People’s Chorus of New York City, founded in 1988 by its Artistic Director Francisco J. Núñez to provide children of all ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds with a unique program of music education and choral performance, held its annual benefit gala at Frederick P. Rose Hall on Monday, March 15.

well-wishers, featured Mr. Núñez conducting The New York Pops and more than 340 chorus members from 8 to 18. They were joined by a roster of guest artists that included the legendary Maurice Hines, who introduced the audience to two tap-dancing stars of tomorrow--17-year-old John Manzari and his brother, 14-year-old Leo. Other guest artists were Sean Bradford, the star of Broadway’s Scottsboro Boys, the Cuban percussion sensation Dafnis Prieto with his Si O Si Ensemble; the beautiful harmonies of New York Voices; and composer Rob Kapilow leading the YPC in Crosstown M42, a virtual bus ride from the West to the East side of Manhattan, with all sounds of the city, from squealing brakes to cooing pigeons, created by the choristers.

Following the concert, dinner was held in Rose Hall’s Allen Room, overlooking Central Park, where YPC presented its Humanitarian Award to founding board member Holcomb B. Noble and its Corporate Award to Toyota, a longtime supporter.

All proceeds from the March 15 gala will help provide for general operating expenses and scholarships for more than half of the members of the chorus, which numbers more than 1100 young people through its core after-school program and its satellite program in New York City schools. This summer the Young People’s Chorus of New York City returns to Japan for its second tour of the country and will make its debut in Wales at the Llangollen International Music Festival.
